Z. Vex Box of Rock SOUNDCLIPS PART 2 SG Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
So I did a new thread with soundclips of the Lo Tone this time with the SG Bass, and I'm way overdue to post some decent SG Bass/Roundwound strings/Box of Rock clips, which has been my main tone for a good long while now for live gigs with my main band. So here we go, here's the Box of Rock, Drive and Tone at half, with just my bridge pickup to do some fancy playing like I like to do a lot:

http://media.putfile.com/SGBoR

Here's a similar setting with a different riff, a really classic Marshall "crunch" sound I think that lends itself well to this sort of playing:

http://media.putfile.com/SGBoR2

And here's with both pickups on the SG Maxed for a meaty, grunty, deep distorted tone that really purrs when I hit that powerchord at the end:

http://media.putfile.com/SGBoR3

That's my main tone when I play in a strictly supportive role under the guitars, and I think it really rounds out the mix well. Those tones are really impeccable I think, so here's a lower gain setting for when I want to get a sloppier, less "crunched" tone:

http://media.putfile.com/SGBoR4

But the real handiness for the lower gain setting is for some fancy chording stuff like this:

http://media.putfile.com/Tremolo1

or this:

http://media.putfile.com/Tremolo2

Sorry I was too lazy to redo those clips without the tremolo, but they'll give you a good idea what I like to use that sound for.

EDIT: IF PUTFILE ISN'T WORKING FOR YOU check out the clips on soundclick here: http://www.soundclick.com/PsychedelicBassJams

Anyway, obviously I like these tones because I use them about 99% the time on a live gig, but what do you think? Do these clips sound impeccable or just blah?

By the way, if anyone has any problems getting the clips to play, just try to play them again later. I've been having problems with putfile lately. If you still can't get the clips to play and you'd like to hear them, let me know, and I will see about putting them on soundclick or something.

Soundsclips are always wanted!!

However none of them are working in FF 3.0.3 or IE8.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to do the clips. Unfortunately, I can't get them to work either.

Okay. So what do you think?

Also, if anyone else is having trouble with putfile, I'm getting these up on soundclick so I think you can check out the clips here: http://www.soundclick.com/PsychedelicBassJams

Also I might mention that I think that third clip has sort of a Dusty Hill "fart in a trashcan" quality. Does anyone else feel the same way about that clip?

So no one has anything to say whatsoever? If you think these are just blah or even lame, let me know. If you don't I'll have no choice but to assume you were so astounded by the organicness and authenticy of my tone that you're plumb speechless .

I check your threads, but don't normally listen to clips because the style is not really my thing.

Understood. Check out the third clip though, that's got that low and farty bass tone, which is really what I use most of the time, and it's way different than my regular bridge pickup soundclips, it's more about laying a solid foundation than doing my regular fancy riffing. Actually I've started to roll off the bridge pickup on a lot of songs and go with that meaty, farty neck pickup sound.

these clips remind me why I want one of these so much, but I dont have extra cash which means I'd have to sell my Sansamp RPM. And I'm hesitant to do that because a) its so versitlie and b) I dont use that much distortion anyway, so to go from a rackmount pre to a distortion pedal makes me wonder if it's worth it.
*sigh*

I think clip three sounds great, if a little too dirty for me...

I just made some soundclips of my RPM
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...?bandID=890138
they're not perfect, but I like em mostly. It sounds a little tinny to my ear but I'm used to hearing it through speakers

edit: check the sansamp RBI vs RPM thread for my clips and comment there if you want - it might keep this thread from going off the rails sooner than usual for TB

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm kind of surprised everyone likes the third and fourth clips the most, the first two are the ones that really knock my socks off and the third and the fourth ones are just my plain old bass tone by now, I've heard it and played it so much that it's kind of blah to me now. But with both of those pickups maxed like I have in the third and fourth clips I do feel this pedal helps me round out the sound of my band real well; I haven't been able to find anything better for it despite continuing to look for a long time.

So anyways, my next question, in case anyone would be kind enough to take a listen to these clips and the clips I did with my Jazz Bass here:

Z. Vex Box of Rock SOUNDCLIPS

is what sounds better? The third and fourth clip of the SG Bass? Or the Jazz Bass clips? I personally prefer the sound of my SG Bass, I think it's bigger and fills out the bottom end of my band better, but for some reason I have the impression that bass players would rather hear my Jazz Bass tone... I don't know I'm curious if anyone has any preference on this.

And as for the RPM vs. a Box of Rock, I'm sure the RPM can give you a good driven tone, as would the Box of Rock, and giving up one decent driven tone for a different decent driven tone isn't always necessary... unless you have reason to believe that one driven tone will give you something closer to what you're looking for than the one you already have. Hm. For your RPM clips, did you record them direct? I'll bet you can get a thunderous sound mic'ing up your rig! I do have a Sansamp RBI, which is a really cool unit, but it isn't as thick and doesn't have quite as musical a response to my technique as the Box of Rock does for those driven tones. Not sure precisely how the RPM and RBI differ, but I'm sure all that would vary player to player. Anyways, my point is to you that it seems the RPM works for you, so even though the grass is always greener on the other side, you're probably best off sticking with the RPM. Rock on!

I know I'm a pest when it comes to asking for feedback, but I'd appreciate it if I could get at least on person to chime in on what you think sounds better, these SG Bass clips or those Jazz Bass ones.

I really like the first two. Those are pretty neat tones.
