I had a B1x... the b1 with the expression pedal. I got it hoping to use the pedal as a volume pedal, but it was very hard to put it where you wanted. on or off was easy enough, but picking a particular spot in between was a bitch.
ok , you asked about the b1 not the b1x... I used mine strictly as a tuner, except for an envelope filter type deal that I used briefly on an intro to a song, but then stopped using it for the same reason I didnt use the other effects, they all felt "fake" to me, it reminded me of a generic keyboard trying to emulate other things.
The plastic case always scared the hell out of me too. But it never gave me any problems.
I've heard great things about the b2, but I don't have any experience with them personally.

B1 is ok, greatly improved over previous Zoom pedals but if you can scrape a few more bucks together the B2 is a lot more user friendly and sounds better. Don't worry about the plastic case they never failed on my previous Zooms.
