Zoom B2.1u as a bass synth?

Sign in to disble this ad
I got my Zoom B2.1u a week ago and have discovered that there are some interesting possibilities using it as a synth unit. As always the presets blow chunks but are OK starting places. With the 11 synth wave forms, other effects: ring modulator, compressor, octaver, phaser, tremolo with 3 wave forms, defret (portamento!), pedal wah, auto filters, EQ including lo and hi pass, flanger, vibrato, harmonized pitch chifter, delays and reverb. Using all of those it is possible to build up fairly complex and pleasing synth sounds, plus you can save your creations.
Now I normally would not consider the Zoom a synth unit but with one of my all synth projects about to take off I am seriously considering using the Zoom for my stage gear to simplify sound changes as the sounds can get pretty close to the recordings, some of which were done running my bass thru a modular synth as well as my other gear. The other surprise here is the other synth geeks in the band were impressed and surprised with the sounds coming out of that red box.

I get some really crazy sounds with my B2. The "Synth" patches kinda suck but combinations of fuzz, filter, pitch shift and delay for example can get pretty cool. I like the ring mod with the step phaser too.

I totally dig the various combinations as synth on that unit. That's all I'll use at a gig for quite a while, I'm sure.

The mono synth sounds great, but the tracking is unfortunately not great ... just don't play a lot of notes. The standard synth tracks quite well, though, and even supports chords!
