3-Pickup T-40

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a T-40 that I'm using as a major project... I sanded it down, stained it black, removed the phase switch and installed an arcade-button killswitch. My next goal is to install a 3rd pickup in the middle position.

Real estate under the pickguard is limited, so I'm considering a 6-position rotary switch so I can choose neck, neck/mid, mid, mid/bridge, bridge and neck/bridge.

Can anyone lend a hand with a wiring diagram? I'm thinking it'll be easier to get new pots and caps for it while I'm doing this, but I'd like to keep the coil-splitting ability.

Whatcha gonna use for a 3rd pup? Another T40 toaster?

The lack of a 'sweet spot' pickup made me sell my T40... but i did have a T45 with an added T40 pup in the bridge... It sounded good, just too heavy in the long run.

Currently, I've got a blade in the bridge position and a toaster in the neck. I haven't rotated them out to see what I prefer in that regard, but the soon-to-be third pickup is a toaster.

The T-40 I'm working with is heavier than my unmodded natural finish one, and I think will be a few ounces heavier with the new pickup (even after routing/ chiseling).

I have this diagram on hand from way back, you can switch the positions around as desired.

As shown:
1. Pickup 1
2. Pickup 2
3. Pickup 3
4. Pickups 1 and 2 parallel.
5. Pickups 1 and 3 parallel.
6. Pickups 2 and 3 parallel.
7. Pickups 1, 2 and 3 parallel.

Pardon my ignorance, but how is there a 7th setting on a 6 position switch?

This was a diagram for a 7 position rotary switch setup, but you can omit the setting you don't want, and change the order of the terminals how you want them.

I can draw you a new diagram if it's too hard to follow this one. This was just an older one I had on hand.
