3 Pickups , Phase Cancellation

Sign in to disble this ad
If I wanted to wire up a bass with 3 split coil p-bass pickups, is there any way to do it so that none of the combinations of 2 (bridge/middle, middle/neck, bridge/neck) have phase cancellation?

Is this also possible having all 3 pickups on together?

None of them should have phase issues, and you can use all three at the same time.

Is this the case without having to reverse the leads like you would on a set of jazz bass pickups?

With P bass pickups, each one is a humbucker. If they are the same brand, and you wire them up the same way, they will be in phase with each other. If your did have two that were out of phase, just reverse the leads on one of them.

there will still be cancellation, though; each pickup you add will make the bass less clear and loud than before. they may be in phase, but each one loads down the next, causing loss.

(unless you added them in series, which would make each added pickup well louder, but also darker and muddier.)

I had two DiMarzio Ps and a model G on a bass once. I rarely used all three at once, but two at a time worked fine.
