3 wires from pickup, which is which?

Hi folks,
I picked up an old Lark bass about a week ago. I am having a bit of trouble with the wiring right now. There are 3 wires coming from the pickup. I installed a new output jack, but it still makes a ton of noise
I couldn't find any schematics for the bass in question. There's a red wire, a black wire, and a white wire coming from one pickup.

red - hot
black - ground
white - sheild

would be my guess. but I could be completely wrong. trial and error may be the way to go on this one. where were they attached originally?

I would upgrade the pickup and replace the pots and wiring. then shield the cavity. then you'll have a growly tone monster
