300k tone pot > volume boost?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I wired 300k audio taper tone pots (from guitarelectronics.com) into both of my basses recently. I love the extra treble, but there is a pretty obvious volume boost as I crank up the tone. Has anybody else experienced this, or does anybody know what could cause this?

The extra resistance makes it easier for your signal to go to the amp than to go to ground.

Some people have problems with the tone control reducing volume if the tone is wired in before the volume control.
This obviously only applies to basses with a single volume control though.

How is your bass wired?

The difference between a 250K and a 300K pot should be rather subtle.

Remember that the tolerance on pots can be as much as 20%.
That means that your 250K pots can be anywhere from 200K to 300K, and your 300K pots can be anywhere from 240K to 360K.

Furthermore, the difference between 250K and 300K is even less than the difference between a 250K pot and a 500K pot.

I have a J Bass and a P bass, and both of them are wired following the diagrams from Seymour Duncan.

250k linear volume pots
300k audio tone pots
.047 orange drops

The extra volume isn't bothering me, and I love the sound! I was just wondering what could cause the volume boost since I thought that the tone pot doesn't really affect the volume much...

I found something similar when I used a "hole in the middle" tone setting on my amp, with tone control rolled back there was a huge drop involume as 50% of the sound was removed
