4 string fretless project. PU choices & placement question.

I`m about to order a custom bass. It will be a 4 string unlined fretless neckthru. The Luthier is an acoustic kind of guy, so I like the way his basses sond unplugged, and the question of PU type and placement he leaves to a customer.

I, personally, like the sound of Gary Willis bass:

even though I prefer using neck PU on my MIM JB.

What I like in the tone of Ibanez GWB is it`s growl and clarity even with palm muting. I do a lot of palm muting and some times feel that my neck PU lacks some clarity especially in a low register.

So, can I get that GWB clarity by simply putting, say, Nordstrand Big Split in a bridge position? Can I expect clarity with the same PU but in a neck postion? A mid position between those two, maybe? A different PU? Lindy Fralin p PU in a bridge position?

Would like to hear opinions. Thanks.
