5 String Am Standard P Bass Split Pick-Ups?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey...

Wondering if anyone knows what companies make custom split pick-ups for this bass other than Nordstrand? I have looked around and cannot find any other custom pick-ups for this bass.

I did try the Nordstrands and found them to be dark, muddy and just not for me.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

I had a bass (passive) with the NP5 in it and it was anything but dark and muddy. To each his own, I guess!

Maybe you can get someone to sell you 1/2 a 5 string set for the long pickup and 1/2 a 4 string set for the shorter one? Maybe try the folks at Hanson Pickups? They make 4 and 5 string sets in a couple of different flavors, including a Neo Punch. Top notch guys to deal with as well...

regarding the Nordstrands... I don't know what could have occurred during the installation as my Luthier did install them for me. But I think he isn't the best on wiring. Who knows... but that was my take on those pick ups. I like the stock Fender pick ups better, so back in they went. But now after time has past, I'm not really liking those either. I did have a Duncan Quarter Pounder Jazz pick up installed at the bridge and that one pick up makes up for some of the loss of the stock pick ups. But I can only imagine what the bass will sound like if I have a great set of splits at the neck.

Thanks for your input! I will look into Hanson.

Greetings from the North,

Keep the stock Fender P5 pickup and drop in a John East P-Retro. You'll keep that root P sound but will give you so many variations to work with. The meat (highs, mids, lows) you seek is in this. It will let you go passive without added colouration or active as quick as you want. No routing or drilling needed.

I was going to start droppin in other pups and now I am so glad that I did this instead. Check it out it works.

I have the Nordstrand in my P5, and although it is darker than the stock pickup, I would hardly call it dark and muddy. I think it has a more of traditional hollow sound than the stock pickup, and cuts out the high-mid honk a little.
