5 string j-bass copy pu recommendation

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 5 string SX jazz copy. It is a fretless model, but I play it with roundwounds on it.

Anyway looking to replace the stock pups with something of better quality, looking for recommendations. On a side note I have heard some say that the low B of a five string really can't be captured with passive pickups, and that I should get it upgraded to active pickups.

Not sure I want to do that much surgery to her.

Anyway tone wise I do a bit of effects. I like something versatile and clean, but with a good thump when needed. If that helps define. I would consider it very rare that I would solo the bridge pickup. More often I am using the neck pup with some bridge mixed in to help wound out the mid and high. Just an idea of where I am going tone wise.

Sorry to bump my own questions, to mention a couple of the brands I am looking at:

The Bartolini J replacement set.

The EMG set sold through Stewart Mac*

Seymore Duncans

Fender stock replacement

I starred the Stew Mac one as I think that is the lead contender price point which is relevant to me at this point. However price at the expense of not being a real improvement is not an option.
