5-string J bass pickups?

Sign in to disble this ad

I'm looking into upgrading some of the hardware of my 5-string mim Fender Jazz. I've heard some good things about Bartolini pickups, I just need to make sure before I make a full on decision. What pickups are good for bringing out a nice mellow tone, with some growl and punch when needed?

Thanks.

I had a set of Duncan 67/70's, and they were fantasticfor a mellow vintage tone. The bridge pup growled nicely. A very sweet sounding and underrated pickup if you ask me. I think I have some sound clips of them on my hard disk....PM me if you're interested in hearing them.

I also had a set of original Marcus Miller pickups from his signature 5, and they had a bit more of a vibtage tone and ver extremely articulate. But these are probably harder to come by on a daily basis....so I'd go with the Duncans

I'd say based on your description of what you're looking for, I'd go with Nordstrand NJ5F all the way. They are a single coil pickup that drop right in to Fenders(thats what the "F" stands for). They have a very focused and solid bottom end, and great growl in my experience!! You wont be disappointed in these pickups.

I just put in a set of these Nordstrands (NJ5F) in my 5-string deluxe last week. I took them out right away due to really high level RF buzz, even when my hands were on the strings. I put the Fender Noiseless pickups back in and the hum was gone.

I'm not saying you shouldn't try the Nordstrands, they have a great reputation. I'm just wondering if anybody else had this experience? (And yes, the wiring was done correctly and all the grounds were connected and checked with a continuity tester. I even tried reversing the polarity and disconnecting the magnets' ground wires.)

Perhaps there is some incompatibility with the Fender preamp. My bass is a 2002 American Deluxe.

While the Nordstrands were in, they sounded brighter but I couldn't really evaluate the sound due to the RF buzz.

Sorry for the hijack.

Nordstrands, Duncans, Fralins in a Lakland USA JO5 (Clips)

I ended up ordering the Hansons, so the Duncans are for sale (see the accessories forum).

I put a pair Bart 59CBJS in my yamaha 5-string and love 'em. Nice warm, bright but not overly so and a little growl when I need. The output level isn't that high but it's hardly a problem. These are the Classic Bass Jazz that are said to have a cleaner top end than the traditional Barts.
