I've had Nordstrand NJ5FSs, Bartolini CBJD1s, and Delano something-or-others (all humcancelling) and dialed to the bridge with a little cut in the highs and they all could EASILY pass for P basses.

| | | | well, let's assume i can tell a difference (I can, actually - P-bass is "barkier" than neck J-bass, with more mid). So what then?

Most humbuckers are parallel which will scoop mids and give it a clean modern sound. The p-bass humbucker (and a few others) is wired serial. This will boost mids and give it a nastier, dirtier, tone. |
