5 string j Warwick fretless Need recommendations

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi
i have a 94 Warwick streamer fretless 5 string with Bartolini long jazz style pickups and Aguilar OBP3 preamp.
the Bartolini pickups are 59V70.
as bill Bartolini himself wrote to me after i emailed him:
"59V's were stacked coil hum-cancelers. The design string width is 70 mm. The output level is approximately half of that of a J-Bass pickup. They are noise-free. They should be used with suitable electronics unless you are willing to accept the reduced output and use them as passives."

i don't really like those pickups. i think that they are to dark and weak.
i want more punch and output. more open sound and less dark but nice bottom.
i had an opportunity to buy a set of Bartolini 59J L1-LN1 split coil pickups for good price but that opportunity get away and anyway i don't know what would be the difference between those pickups and my pickups.
any thoughts?
any other recommendation for good pickups for my bass that are strong and punchy but not to pricey?
thanks
Tomer.

Seymour Duncan pickups seem to be a perfect match for Warwicks.

Almost every pro using Warwick non stock upgrade from MEC to SD.

I'd check the AJB model, if active jazz pup is what you want.

but i wonder how active pickups like the SD AJB or EMG will match with the AGUILAR OBP3 preamp which runs at 18V?

I have a fretless LX5 that sounds great with the original MECs, maybe get someone to trade with you? MECs get a bad rep possibly from the preamp (I tend to leave the bass EQ flat on miine).

so I've got the MEC active jazz pickups. would there be a problem to install them with the Aguilar OBP3 preamp?

I can't see why there would be a problem. Just give it a try!

you should post some sound clips. i know its too late to record the old ones for comparison, but it would be cool to hear you setup if you are able to record. -joep

I would love to hear a clip. I got a Thumb 5 fretless and I am thinking about switching to the OBP-3. I am not sure about the pickups just yet, but I rather do all the wiring all at once if I am switching both.
