5-string OLP MM Mod question: P-bass pickup?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an opportunity to get a *really* inexpensive 5-string OLP MM bass. These are passive, and I thought it'd be a great chance too to drop in a 5-string P-bass pickup.

What I'm looking for:

1 - recommendations for a 5-string P pickup
2 - recommendations for wiring, etc. I expect I'll need to add a vol pot or a switch of some sort as I'd like to be able to dial in or dial out either pickup. Not too worried if I can't blend them, so a two way switch may be fine.

I like a vintage P sound and will string this with flats.

The problem usually is that you can't put the P-bass pickup exactly in the sweet spot, because it and the MM pickup take up a bit of the same area. So you'd have to give a bit on placement on the P-bass pickup.

You could stack the volume knobs of each pickup, or you could easily use a switch... just depends what you prefer.

Not the best idea for a mod machine if you want to use a P pickup. You'd be much better of picking up a squier 5 string and modding it.

The OLP is a poor platform for a P pickup because as the poster above said, the humbucker already takes up part of the P pickup's real estate. If the P pickup isn't in the proper placement, it isn't going to sound like a P at all.

Any passive 5-string P pickup should be a drop-in replacement for those.
