5 string P new guts? Where to start?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have a 5 string MIM Fender Jazz routed for a P at the neck. The pups in it are not spaced correctly, and have horrible tone.
I also am unhappy witht he volume difference between this passive set up and the active set up of my MM SR5 FLess.

I want to replace the pickups and ad a preamp.

I am looking at audrie(SP) preamps/knobs/plates and I have no ideas about pups. After reading I believe I only need a new P pickup. The jazz pickup is fine. Which passive P pickup?

Money is somewhat of an issue. I want to keep this below $400. I can do the wiring myself.

Please give me options and why you would choose them.

Jonathan

I cant find any Bassline 5 string P bass pickups. Have you thought of routing out the cavity to install a soapbar housing pickup? Then you could add EMG 40P5's.

I have a Nord NP5 in a P/J bass and it sounds just like a great P should. I also will have another in a new Warmoth project soon, also with an Audere. One nice thing about Nordstrand is that they can space it to your bass' needs, as long as it's not too narrow. Brian at bestbassgear.com has been a HUGE help to me, working with Nordstrand to get the right spacing for my project bass.

Thanks, that helps a lot.
