500k or 250k dpdt volume pot?

Sign in to disble this ad
Greetings

I'm going to replace the dpdt volume/active-passive pot in my Cort/Elrick RB5 (standard Korean Bartolini electronics), which has been scratchy since the day I got it. Unfortunately, there's solder right over the stamp on the original pot, and I can't read the value. Does anybody know for sure if it's 250 or 500? Also, a split-shaft pot is ok, right, as long as it's 1/4" shaft?

Have you tried the basic cleaning of the pot itself with contact cleaner? I would stick with 250's

Yup--tried a couple times to clean. On Bartolini's site they have 250 volume on just about every application, but I didn't see a diagram with a dpdt volume. I suspect it is a 250, but want to make sure before I order. Thanks.

You can measure the pot with a cheap meter you can get from any hardware store for about $10. Measure the resistance in ohms between the middle lug and one of the outside lugs.

Otherwise just go with what it says in the schematic.

Make sure you get the same type as the one in your bass, the split shafts can be fitted with knobs for a solid but it's a tad tricky, so better get the right kind as most vendors have both...

I have a ntbt bart pre in one of my basses and the diagram suggests using a 25 k for the volume which is what it came with. +1000000 on using a meter to measure the pot.

Benjamin: Yeah, I've got a multimeter. Not being much of an electrician, I didn't think of that. Thanks for the tip on where to do the measurement.

buchananbasss: Darn, you're right. I saw the "25 k ohm" volume pot in the NTMB schematic and convinced myself it meant 250. But I see the blend pot is specifically labeled 250.

I'll try my multimeter and will post results later tonight.

For anybody still following: I put a new battery in my multimeter (1st one in the +/- 10 years I've had it), touched the probes together, and adjusted the needle to 0. Then measuring across an outside lug and the center lug (and depending which outside lug and which way I had the shaft turned), I pretty consistantly got 13 ohms. So... 25k ohm then?

You mean 13k ohms, yes?

Measure between the outside lugs, that gives you the max resistance of the pot, since it's built like this;
Code:
Lug 1<------------------>Lug 3
              ^
              |
          Center Lug

Benjamin: the selector switch label says RX1K, so I'm presuming it's 13k.

Stuggi: Actually 12k when I rechecked it this am across the outside lugs. So now is this debate "Finnished"? Sorry
