the form factors mean that you have to rout and you have excess cavity on the sides. If you have something like a MIM where there is a monster cavity, then all it means cutting a new pickguard. Personally on a MIM, I would go the ful deal and use a Split P to get the additional Booty - but that is a matter of taste.
I took a different approach and made a Dirnt into a PJ, split P in front, 51 P style at the bridge. The 51 style has side by side coils for hum cancelling. I like it a bunch. Really punchy rock tone. Warmoth neck with fretboard extension and Tele headstock, Hip Shot tuners, the pickups are from Vintage Vibe. Overwound Ainico 3 in front. The standard VVG split coil 51 in the rear.
