Oddly enough you should say that, because my PJ Jazz bass is sporting an Antiquity II Jazz pickup in the bridge, and a Curtis Novak handwound P pickup in the neck.
Eventually I will probably get another Curtis Novak pickup for the bridge position, but for now, I'm quite happy with my Antiquity II pickup.
Anyways, my vote goes to custom handwound pickups first, the Antiquity II's second, and the Fender's third. |

| | | | Yeah I'd be curious to hear some thoughts on both of those pickups too. I put a set of Nj4s in my 75 ash/maple jazz and frankly they're just not doing it for me.
I'm after that Marcus/Sadowsky ish burpy, sparkly, splanky planky modern jazz tone for this particular bass and the Nj4s (although very nice in other ways) don't do that. Or at least not enough of it.
Pre-amps aside, the pickups must provide the basic sound you're after so you know you're going down the right road, but it can get expensive pretty fast. |

But, you cant go wrong with the Fender CS 60's either. They're much better than the stock Fender J pickups. |

Either way, they are in your price range and would probably deliver the tone you're after.
Otherwise, if you are wanting to sound more like an old Fender, I would go the CS 60s Js. Everyone else seems like they are trying to "improve" the Fender tone, which may or may not be to your liking.

Roger sells his single coils at a good price and I've been told they sound alot like the Antiquity II's. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
