Question '62 Jazz passive preamp?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently played a '62 Jazz reissue and absolutely loved the stacked volume/tone knob controls. Where can I buy an after market preamp that is passive, and has the vol/tone double stacked knobs that will fit in my G&L jazz?

I should add that I have the JB, not the JB-2 so I'm almost sure it has the same control plate as a standard Fender jazz.

Not sure what you mean - a preamp that is passive?

There is no such thing as a passive preamp.
The two terms are conflicting.

Passive means that no active components are used. Only resistors, capacitors, inductors and switches.

"Preamp" means that at least one active component (BJT, FET, opamp, whatever) is used to amplify the gain, lower the output impedance, or provide EQ.

Why do you like the VVTT setup?
It's useless because of the tone control interactions.

There's a guy on eBay that can make them for you. Rawsound2003 or something like that.

The Norstrand 2B-3B preamp will give you Volume/Pull Passive, Blend, Bass/treble stacked. Designed for Jazz basses.

Well, you could take any preamps and skip the bass and treble controls for passive tone controls, but if you are going to do that, it's a better idea to just use a buffer circuit.
Less circuitry to degrade the signal and add noise.

Also, with two buffers, you could eliminate the tone control interaction. Though OTOH, I'm not sure how different a Jazz bass is going to sound with both pickups played together, but not loading against each other.

I'm assuming he just loosely used the term preamp when referring to the onboard electronics passive or active.

You should be able to download the old Fender spec, buy the parts and build the stacked vol/tone configuration for around $70 or so. That's what I did when I wanted to spec out my old SX Jazz to be a stock '62.

It's actually a very cool and versatile setup. I ended up wiring a PJ bass the same way, and got a lot more tonality out of the bass. Worth trying.

Here's the pots:

Allparts- EP-4485-000 - 250K-250K Concentric Pot $12.

You can get the Fender CTS pots here:

http://guitarpartsresource.com/elect...fenderpots.htm

$13

You need two. Here's the knobs for them:

MK-0137-010 - Chrome Concentric Knob

Or here:

http://guitarpartsresource.com/guita...stackknobs.htm

Keep in mind that double volume/tones will make the bass sound darker.

You might find them cheaper elsewhere.

Sorry about my wording, I'm having a tough time stating exactly what I mean. Yes, preamp was used loosely as my on board controls.

Basically I'm looking for the double volume controls with a passive tone control on each pickup, just like the '62 jazz. Does anyone make this as a complete plate that just drops in?

You would be paying a ridiculous amount of money for one.
It's much cheaper/easier to assemble it yourself.

So all I need is two of those stacked pots, two of the stacked knobs, a new plate and wiring? That easy?

And two capacitors and an output jack, but yes, it's that easy.

That was before they invented transistors, couldn't fit vacuum tubes into the control cavity, so all the onboard preamps were passive back then...

Randy.

What type of capacitors should I be purchasing?

And the 500K/250K stacked pots are the correct kind?

Sorry for all the dumb questions, I'm very new to the electrical stuff.

Any kind of non-polarized capacitor will work fine.
I like Orange Drop caps.

Pot and capacitor values are personal preference.

500K/250K works, but I would go all 500K to keep the tone from getting too dark.

Why oh why would you want to alter the passive tones out of the 62 reissue?

I've got one and I would never mess with it. Personal thing I guess.

Again, my poorly worded question. I have the G&L JB (the G&L Jazz clone, MIA) and it's a wonderful bass. However, I recently played a 62 reissue and thought the double stacked control system just gave a better palette of tones so I'm trying to get those controls into my G&L.
