'91 EB Stingray vs '12 Ray34 Sound Difference
I've been fretting (pun) over this for a while and wanted to get some opinions. I have a '91 EB SR4 that I've owned since '99. I recently bought a '12 Sterling Ray34. Both basses have a 3 band EQ.
I have to say that the Ray34 has a much gowlier and punchier sound than the SR4. It doesn't seem to have the weak G string issue either. This bugs me since I would expect the USA made original to be superior to the import copy.
Well, I'd like to fix this. Of course the easiest thing to do would be to replace the pickup and preamp. However, I would rather first see if there is some way I can keep the bass stock.
I'm wondering if one of two things could be going on:
1) Could the preamp need servicing? Anyone know of parts ever failing in the pre?
2) Could the pickup need to be regaussed? Anyone ever regaussed a Stingray pickup?
I appreciate anyone sharing their experience.
Is there a significant difference in weight? I find lighter basses tend to sound growlier with many exceptions.
Weight of both is about the same. The Ray34 is a slab body, where the SR4 is contoured.
