Active/passive pickups

Do I need a pup that is designated as active to work with and active preamp? I want to add a preamp to my currently passive bass. Would i have to get a new "active" pup to work with the preamp, or would my passive pickup work with it?

FWIW:

No. Most active basses have passive pickups.
