Active/Passive switch for Artec SE-3
I know there is a lot of info regarding passive/active switches on here (I searched and read a lot of threads), but my question is regarding a specific preamp, the Artec SE-3.
Is it possible, and if so, how?
I could add a switch before the blend pot, but then I would lose the other controls. I suppose I could also add extra controls, but this would mean the bass would end up with 8-10 knobs!!!
Please see pic and advise!! Thanks!
Active/passive switching is possible with any preamp.
Most preamps have only one output, even if they have two inputs. This means the blend pot has to come first. I'm not sure what advantage you were hoping to gain by putting a preamp before a blend control?
Sorry, I didn´t explain very well, I thought about putting the switch before the blend knob (which on this preamp is where the pickups connect).
Where would I add the switch on this preamp?
So I wouldn´t be able to continue to use the volume and eq controls due to them forming part of the preamp. Correct?
Maybe I could add the switch before the blend control, and add two extra stacked controls for the volume and tone?
Then I would go to the output jack, basically giving me two sets of controls.
Would it cause an issue having two seperate circuits connected to the output jack??
In other words, I could switch between:
PICKUPS - DPDT - BLEND - PREAMP - OUTPUT JACK
PICKUPS - DPDT - VOL/VOL - TONE - OUTPUT JACK
Does this make any sense?
The more I think about what I said, the sillier it sounds to me! :D
Maybe I would be better just sticking with quick connect EMG´s!
Ok, I´ve done some research, and you can ignore silly comment number 2 (or was it 3...?).
Anyway, I guess I am left between DiMarzio with the Artec SE-3, with a possible active/passive switch (but seems like a pain) or EMG´s as active only.
I knew there was a reason that I kept buying passive basses :D
So, I have ordered the Dimarzio DP126´s and the Artec Preamp.
Now I need to work out how to wire it!!
Is it possible to have a switch between the pickups and the blend pot, and send it to a completely different circuit for passive, and to the blend-preamp for active?
In other words...
Could I have:
Position 1: Pickups>Blend>Preamp(Vol+3wayEQ)>Jack
Position 2: Pickups>Volume>Volume>Tone>Jack
Is it even possible to send 2 circuits to the same jack? Or is this a bad idea and I should just stick with active?
Also, would there be any benefit to adding a series/paralell switch into this?
Sorry for any (all) stupid questions, but this is my first active rewire!
Ok, I can order that no problem.
Now, the million dollar question... wiring?
(thanks line6man, as always!!!)
Ok, understood! I will give it a try (and no doubt be back with more questions! :D )
However, I just wanted to confirm something...
According to the Artec site, you can use this same preamp with just one pickup, by removing the blend pot and wiring the pickup directly into the preamp.
So, this leads me to beleive that the blend pot is independant from the preamp, and I could add the passive/active switch between the blend and the preamp, and still use the sam blend pot in passive mode. (Is this correct?)
So, could I add a switch and one stacked control for passive tone and volume in this position?
I will still need a 3PDT switch, correct?
What split tone/vol pot should I purchase?
As the DiMarzios have series/paralell options, is it worth adding a switch for these on a PJ?
I apologize for all these questions!!!
