Advice about pick-ups part deux

Sign in to disble this ad
I also am looking to "spruce up" an 80's era Charvel bass. It has the Precision body, but the p-bass /j-bass pick-up combo found on a jazz bass. Right now it has the original Jackson pick-ups in it, but they are wayyyyyy trashed and need to go.

Any suggestions on a cool pick-up combo or set up? I use it right now in a metal band , but would want it to have sort of an all around good sound. Aggressive.

I have always been satisfied with the sound of my other two basses : 72 Fender p with original p/u's and 79 J bass with early 80's era EMG jazz p/u's, so I just haven't really kept up on the pick-up scene.

i just put a new EMG "X-series" P in a bass, and wow did it sound bold! loud, deep and slicing.

an X-series P-J setup would be very metal. (roll back the tone a little and you're in more mellow "regular bass" territory).

EMG's with active 3 band preamp should work very well for that.
