Advice on a Fender JV P-Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,
I've just bought a 83 JV Precision bass, i'm very pleased with the sound for a $500 instrument, it's not even comparable to a made in mexico bass!!

The electronic is very old and i would like to change the pots and capacitors.
The pickup has been changed by the previous owner, i believe it's a bartolini 8S pup.

So i need some advices about the pots&caps: linear log? 500k, 250k? .047uf .022uf ?
what is the best choice for the bartolini 8s ?

what is the configuration of precision bass from the 60's, i can't find information about the electronic of those instruments.

i'm looking for a vintage mellow sound!

Thanks!

There'll be some experts along shortly to inform you about the values of the pots and capacitors. I can't give you any useful information about that, but I can say, based on first hand experience, that you probably have a real gem of a bass. I played several of these when they first showed up in music stores. Wonderful basses with the real vintage Fender sound that I thought Fender had lost forever. It's too bad the previous owner replaced the pickup. He probably didn't know any better. If you don't mind doing some searching and are willing to part with some cash, you might be able to find one of the original pickups. If not, I'd change the Bartolini for Seymour Duncan Antiquities and I'd leave the pots and capacitors alone unless they're shot.

thanks for your reply, i'm still amazed with the quality of the bass(i'll post some pictures)...i don't know why the original owner replaced the pickup, i believe it wasn't a US pickup.

i was thinking about a SD antiquity but i've read pretty good review about bartolini pickup and they sound quite good on the JV, so i'll wait a little...

The electronic still works but i'm trying to approach the original precision bass sound, so i need some advices from the experts!

the current config is :500k pots and i wasn't able to read on the cap...

edit: i was thinking about orange drop caps and CTS pots.

If you want a really vintage tone, go 250k for pots, .1 for the cap ( I like the Orange Drop,) and snatch up an AlNiCo pickup thats built to old Fender Spec. I've got a GFS Vintage, but I haven't gotten to give it a real try yet, though they get good reviews. Also, for that ultimate 50's bass tone, throw some flatwounds into the mix.
