I got a Roscoe SKB5, and it has a Nordstrand pick ups, and Aguilar OP3 but I will like to replace the Aguilar preamp. I have in mind either Demeter, glockenkland, audere, or bartolini. the reason I want to change the preamp is because I get a muddy growly tone right now and I would like to hear all: lows, mids and highs clearly. What you all think is the best or what do you all recomend.

don`t know what`s best, but i have the delano sonar2 (2-band) with jc 4 he/m2 pups in the jag and i like it very much

with the sonar3ms (my favorit, but unfortunatly not possible in the jag without woodwork and i didn`t want to do that) you have switchable mids (300, 500 and 800 hz) - could be interesting for you - take a look at www.delano.de - the stuff they make is really good

If you like the Nordstrand pickups, you could always try a Nordstrand preamp to match.

Someone correct me here, but i thought the OBP3 was a very transparent preamp?

The preamp should not be coloring the sound, so if you don't like what you are hearing, it's probably your pickups that need changing.

IMHO, OBP-3's are pretty transparent 'until' you start boosting the bass a bit. (But like the buzz-words growl, grind, etc it all depends what you personal interpretation of 'transparent' happens to be.) Then the lows can get a bit muddy and undefined, but if you boost everything about the same amount it seems to even out some. I have OBP-3's in two basses but very rarely end up boosting low end on them. Usualy do more cutting of highs and mids if/when needed.

But, boosting bass could easily give the muddy lows he's mentioning. No clue how he's running the bass EQ.

What amp are you using? I know when I boost the bass on my jazz that has an OBP-3 in it (for sale), sometimes it clips the tubes in my preamp and gives me a muddy growly tone.

I'm using a Genz Benz Ubber 2x12 and Genz Benz Shuttle max 6.0 amp. I think it maybe also the combination of woods It's ebony top and walnut body, ebony fretboard.

The lows on a OBP3 are very touchy, and its boosting 40hz or something, but its a super clean and transparent preamp. I switched from a bart pre and it cleared up a lot, so the bart pre might make your problem worse. I'm not very fond of the highs on the obp though where as the barts were less artificial.

I've got 2 Auderes (3 band and 4 band) and have been happy with them and the low bass boost... - also a fan of the Bartolini NTMB too (2 of them too).
