Aero Musicmaster

Just hooked it up with new 250K CTS pots and a .047 orange drop. I managed to do a little comparison sample: a few bars of pick, a few bars of fingerstyle and a few bars of thumb with the tone rolled all the way off. Here's the clips (don't laugh at my playing please )

I'll have a gig impression soon. I'm expecting good things.

Gig Test

My Musicmaster was always fun but playing out, you could really tell the stock electronics were lacking. It barely held it's own onstage.

Well, not anymore. On the gig tonight, the Musicmaster spanked the Jazz bass - hard. It's got a ton of lows now - it's totally nailing that deeper vibe I've been struggling to get. But it's also got a lot of high-end definition. (Almost too much for some techniques w/o any tone rolloff.) Honestly, I think it now has more boom and sizzle than any other axe I've ever had.

Mids... not as much. I'm not getting that throaty presence. Fortunately, that's not really my thing. It's not mid-shy in that frustrating way where you can't hear or feel what you're playing. The lows are aggressive, not subdued.

So in a nutshell, the Musicmaster has become a major tone monster and I'm way happy with the change. This is the most dramatic example I've ever seen of an axe needing - and deserving - an electronics makeover. I'm very grateful to Aero for offering this bass-specific, single-coil upgrade. (AFAIK no one else does.)

I wasn't especially interested in Aero pickups in the past. After this experience, I'd love to try some of their other stuff.

Very Intresting. I was looking for a Musicmaster pickup replacement and looking some p-bass or tele pickups, but then I realized that those pickups can't fit into the musicmaster without routing the body of the bass.

Thanks for the information and pic. BTW, did you received the pickup cover?

The pickup cover they sent did not quite fit through the pick guard. The original cover worked okay but I just decided to go without.

Sounds good. I always wondered what the Aeros would sound like in a Musicmaster. Another alternative: DiMarzio Fast Tracks (Strat replacement pu's) are an exact fit for a Musicmaster. Don't get stuck on them being guitar pick ups -- They are a very powerful stacked humbucker (absolutely no noise) that brings the MM to life. Wicked lows, good mids, pretty highs. A little cleaner than the Aero, but a great alternative to the weak sound of the originals.

Apparently Seymour Duncan Hot Rails work well, too. If you don't mind using a humbucker, there's probably a few good options that don't cost quite so much.

I paid a premium to keep things more "old school".

Fast Tracks aren't stacked, they are dual rail humbuckers.

Two small coils under the cover:

I also have one of Aero's musicmasterer. You're right JEFENATOR that they sound great in recordings and on stage. This pickup completed my bass. Great thanks to Aero!

+1 on the Aero love. Just great sound, and not too mid-rangey--so you don't end up competing with your guitarist for frequencies....

The Fast Track isn't bad either, as long as you wire it in series. Parallel mode is a bit flat-sounding for my tastes.

My 2 cents,
-GB
