Aero Musicmasterer -- what tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a '78 Fender Musicmaster that I use for practice. I've always liked the feel of it so I've been thinking about playing out on it but the stock pups aren't that robust (Fender actually used 6-pole Strat pups). My regular basses are a Jazz with Nordie NJ4's and a Stingray.

Aero makes a replacement pickup for the Musicmaster (which they call the "Musicmasterer"). I asked them how it would sound -- more like a P, or a J, maybe? -- and they said it would just sound like my bass unamplified, so if I like that sound get the pickup. I think I get that, because I play this bass unamplified all the time. But even if my unamplified bass sounds good, replacement pickups -- a P, a J, or a Darkstar --would sound different amplified, wouldn't they?

Before I drop the cost of the pups ($150), shipping to Alaska, and installation, can anybody give me a clue what a Musicmasterer pup might do to change the sound of this instrument? Uh . . . more like a P, or a J, maybe?

Maybe asking for comparisons to other pickups isn't the way to go here, but vintage J and P are sounds I'm generally familiar with. Anybody have any experience AT ALL with the Aeros?

I see another thread running right now with a couple of replies about pickup upgrades for the Musicmaster bass, but so far no mention of the Aero.

Could ANYBODY make a decision about new pickups (even if the options were all good ones like Aeros or Fralins or Nordstrands) if all they knew was that they like the sound of their bass WITHOUT pickups?

Just get the pickup - you won't regret it. I have two sets of J bass Aero rewinds, a 4 and a 5 and they are among the best pups I've heard. Anyone that recommends guitar replacement pups for a Musicmaster never knew Aero makes the killer pup for this bass and might not have even heard of Aero. If Larry tells you its going to sound like your bass unamplified, believe him. You'll be gigging that bass before long.

Not many Music Master users around here is my guess. Plenty of Aero users though. My type 1 PJ set is the best PJ set I've heard to date. I tend to burn through pickups - these have been around a few years now...
