Aero "PJ" pickups anyone?

Sign in to disble this ad
This is not a Precision+Jazz set. Aero calls its split coil (hum cancelling) J pickup "PJ".

So, any users out there? I like Aero Type 1 single coils, are these almost the same without hum?

Thanks.

Description and pic from Aero website:

P Bass Style Pickup in a J Bass Shape. Available for 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, & 10 stringed instruments. Exposed pole pieces for 4 and 5 strings only, all others unexposed. Odd string pickups have an even number of magnets (e.g. 5 string pickups have 6 magnets, the 6th unmagnetized magnet is on the high string side). Four string covers are standard J Bass 4 plastic dog-earŽed covers. All other covers are machined from plastic or wood. String spacing is specified at the time of purchase. Not all string spacings are possible.

I can't understand why you have no replies. I recall there was a lot of talk about Aero a year ago. There must be someone out there who has tried these and can give you their opinion.

I think Aero single-coils are so popular (and by me too) that no-one ever interested in trying out these ones. I'd love hear someone's opinion though.

I haven't tried these ones but i have very similar ones. I was really underwhelmed. the tone of my jazz bass just wasnt there. It became... tinny sounding.

No expereince with these. Both my Lakland and Valenti use Aero J5s.

Pullman, I cannot imagine any Aero pup being "tinny", They have an exceptional exteneded range. They make low B's really define. In fact the only critisim of Aero's I've ever heard is tha they're too "full" sounding. This may be due to their superb response below 100Hz.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm reviving it in the hopes of finding out if this pickup is any good and what it costs.

Like many of the fine products on TB, Aero is a one-man operation. My suggestion is email Larry. He will be more than glad to help. Include your phone number on the missive, and he will probably call you that day. In our discussions one thing became very clear: if you like the way your instrument sounds acoustically, you will probably love his pickups. If you don't, look elsewhere. I viewed it as his pickups do not "color" the instrument's tone; Larry views it as his pickups do not "take away" the actual color of the instrument's tone.

That sounds like it would make them a good choice for an instrument with an exotic-wood body, e.g., a Warmoth build in Black Korina, Wenge, et al.
