Aguilar 4J-60 Jazz Bass Pickups (review with audio)

Ok, so Dave at Aguilar sent me a pair of their new J pups to try out. I'm sure others have reviewed them before but I thought I would share my thoughts and a sample recording:

These are marketed as "vintage" sounding and I think they nail that vibe. Really warm and punchy. They make playing a J bass fun, if you catch my drift.

This is the bass I used them in. It's a custom order. The buyer wanted Fender pups originally but I talked him into these. I think he'll be happy. I highly recommend the Aguilars.

It doesn't sound great. It sounds astoundingly, round, full, melodious and super awesome! That would be my new baby pictured above. I can't wait to play her! I bought a tort guard as well b/c I couldn't make up my mind b/t black and tort...so I'll just swap them as the muse hits me. Thanks, Dan!

I think my search for Jazz bass replacement pickups is over! Thanks for the clip, Dan!

One question: Why is the first half of the clip both pickups on full and then the second half just the rear pickup? Why didn't you also solo the neck pickup?

My last question was:

Did you miss that part?

They need to make both formats of J-5. I'm baffled how each company thinks they only need to make one or the other These don't fit Sadowsky 5!

These (AG 5J-60) fit 19mm string spacing, which is about as standard as anything in a five string. I don't know what Roger is currently building; but I would be surprised if it wasn't 19 mm. The current Fender Jazz 5 is also approx. 19 mm. Lakland and others are 19 mm also.

Hope this is helpful.

hmmm maybe there is little different pickup shell on Sadowsky's? Dave are these AG 5J-60 o.k. for Fender Marcus Miller V.?...I think Fender makes custom pups for that bass becouse 7.25" Radius (184 mm) . Thank you Wimpy

Tell that to Joe Osborn! He only uses the neck pickup.

P bass pickups sound different and are closer to the bridge.

hes not referring to spacing but the pickup shell. youre offering pickups that are replacements for the standard fender size 5 string jazz pickups which lakland uses. sadowsky uses two 4 string bridge pickup length pickups for their 5 string sets. nordstrand and duncan offer both sizes in their 5 string jazz bass pickups.

Right. Fralin and Hanson are Fender size only. Dimarzio is sadowsky size only ... its frustrating if you want to use your favorite set in different basses.

Omg, great sound and awesome bass. That is one of the most attractive instruments I've laid my eyes on.
