Aguilar OBP-1...Single 9 Volt battery?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm installing an Aguilar OBP-1 (2 band) preamp. I'm curious if anyone runs them with just a single 9V instead to the recommended 18V and what the results are.

While I have no experience with the piece itself, I will guess that it won't work at all, just like effects pedals won't work without the correct voltage.

2 cents thrown.

always used it at 9v.... sounds great!
If you don't use the ctrls at their maximum (I have no idea why some one would this) you'll be fine.

Thanks for the replies. I just noticed, while looking at Nino Valenti's website, some photo's of OBP-1's wired with a single 9V's. Between that and what you guy's say, I should be fine. Thanks again.

The OBP-1's that have a single 9v have a Fishman Voltage Doubler. Unfortunately for me, Fishman discontinued this and I've been using 2 batteries since.

Thanks Nino. I almost sent you a PM to ask you about that. I appreciate the help and guess I'll just go with 18V instead. It's not really a big deal, just trying to save space.

I hear you on saving space. It's getting too tight in my control cavities that I've started using battery boxes to keep things neat.

I bet mine won't look that nice! If my little experiment doesn't work out, I just might be contacting you to build me J/MM.

Can someone confirm what the skinny is on this? Some posts are saying 9v is fine, while Valenti says 9v used to be do-able but not anymore.

Thanks!

9V is fine. No voltage doubler used on my OBP-1 with a single 9V and it sounds great.

Sure was a pain, trying to squeeze 2 batteries in a hacked-out '76 Jazz body. Worth it, though!!

I don't doubt the folks who say it works fine @9V. But the official instructions did call for 18V IIRC and IME it really kicks butt that way.

Me too. Although I have since changed them to 18 volt for the EMG's, both mine worked just fine at 9 volts and they are the newer versions (one is less than one year old).

Thanks for confirming!

Does that mean that instead of having +18db of boost with 18v, the increase will be less than that with the 9v?

No. It's more about having a little more headroom in the pre, not the amount of boost. You probably won't even notice a difference.
