Aguilar OBP-3 question - Mid selector switch

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I've just recieved parts for a gecko bass from warmoth. The electronics are going to be Bartolini P2s and an Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp. I need to drill a hole in the bass, for the mid selector switch (Already wired it, so no push-pull option), but before I begin doing this, and risk destroying something, though not likely, I would just ask you people here. Is the mid selector switch really important?

Also, could anyone describe how the difference will be, when switching between the two options, with the mid selector switch?

Hope somebody can help me

Do yourself a favor and go get a push-pull mid pot. They are only about $10 and IMO it's worth $10 to not have to drill a hole in your bass. As far as the benefits of having a choice between the two freqs, I love the ability to switch back and forth. To me it makes my Jazz with EMG's so much more versatile. I like to bump 800hz when I solo the neck pickup, and crank 400hz when I solo the bridge.

yup, I'd second the push/pull pot on mids for frequency select route.

If you can't/won't do that, and have to choose one frequency, personally I'd choose the 400hz - helps with cutting through. 800hz IME works better for cutting frequencies for slap.

Hmm, I also believe that a push/pull would be a good solution, though I have to ask, is it very difficult to rewire the already wired switch? The other possibilty is to ask one of the guitartechs in my vicinity, as I'm also going to have a Leo Quan Badass V bridge filed at him.

Thanks!

Its super easy to rewire- the bottom of the push/ pull pot should look exactly like the switch that you're getting- ie. it will have 6 prongs, you just have to wire the pot exactly as the switch was wired and thats it! I personally have one of these and just wired it for 400hz- but I generally keep the same sound at most times, and 400hz helps give a little girth to the sound and helps to cut through as was already mentioned. If you like to constantly be changing sounds, you would probably like having the option. If you're really picky, you can wire the mids on to 2 seperate pots, one to select a frequency between 400hz and 800hz and one to select the level of that frequency- but then you would have to drill a hole for a whole other pot vs. just a switch.
