Aguilar OBP-3 questions

Sign in to disble this ad
So i've decided I want to replace my preamp in my MIM P/J bass. replaced the pickups a few months ago and loved the improvement, and the only thing that's really bugging now is the onboard preamp. I've decided on the OBP-3 and have a few questions.

How is the sound in comparison to my current preamp? (the one in the P bass special) I know there'll be in a improvement but I have no idea by how much.

Also is the active/passive switch worth the extra cash? How will this affect my sound.

Sorry for the somewhat n00bish post, i'm completely uneducated when it comes to preamps.

I think that the OBP-3 will sound more musical (less harsh) than the stock pre. I also think that the bypass switch is well worth it. I have an OBP-2 in my bass, which I run passive most of the time, but when I am soloing and want a more modern sound I activate the pre and it sounds like a completely different bass. Well worth the additional cost, IMO.

I've had a few OPB-3's in the past in various basses, and one great feature is the mid tones blend with the bass and treble in a complimentary way, and not make the tone shape weird like on some other pres. Enjoy!
