I'm getting a Fender american deluxe V bass at Christmas.

I was quite impressed by the bass itself, not so with the preamp though, so I'll probably be upgrading it.

My question is which one works better?

I think it depends on what you're looking for. The J-retro has a reputation for sounding very "active." The Aguilar is a powerful tone-shaper (IMO/IME lots of boost available). The Audere is supposed to be more transparrent and have many options and everything I've read about the Sadowsky preamp boils down to a single word: "awesome."

I haven't heard to much about the Nordstrand pre btu it is relatively new on the market.
