Aguilar OBP-3 vs Bartolini 3 band (Dave you can answer to!)

Can Anyone tell me the difference between these preamps. Will the Aggie give a bass more mass than the bart? Or vice versa. I have a bartolini in my bass, and want more high end sizzle, but without changing the tone of the bass. Talk to me fellas!

Your bart does not sizzle?

IT has the same Treble freq point and gain as the Aguilar.
Well in fact the aguilar is 6.5k where the Bart is 6K
Q aside.. there should be no practical difference.

A Glockenklang has the treble at 18Khz wich is veeery high. that should be very sizzly without high midrange harshness.

Right now im testing an ACG/East EQ02 Filter Preamp, and it has the ability to add a delicious layer of sizzle without too much hiss.

I prefer the Bart preamps over Aguilar. I feel that the Bart pre's give more growl and grit where the OBP-3 is a VERY clean sounding preamp. I had on OBP-3 for about a day and took it out. Didn't like it one bit.

I currently have a Bart 3-band in a fretless and it sizzles plenty. I keep the treble at '0' or less.

Hello, heh. I'm the Dave Mr. Sims refers to in the thread title. I think what Mr. Sims, and me as well, is askin, Whether or not the Aguilar OBP 3 has the same type of high end that its sister, the OBP 1, has. Recently he and I played his '73 Fender Jazz, loaded wit an Aguilar OBP 1 and a set of Dimarzio Ultra J pickups. I was skeptical of the Aguilar, and am currently tryin to find a pre I like for a 5 string Darryl Jones. When we plugged in his
'73, the tone was truly nice. Very open, natural top end, that really had a bite. The OBP 1 is all boost, the other Aguilar pres are cut/boost. First, I'm wonderin about the differences in the Aguilar preamps. Second, I believe I agree, and said so to Mr. Sims, that the Bart preamps are pretty natural soundin. I think they are a bit more aggressive, but I haven't heard the Aguilars at 18v hooked up to a set of humbuckers like in the MTD Mr. Sims is playin. We liked the top end in his Jazz so much, I'd like to have that type of top end sound in a bass myself. Think he's wonderin if the Aguilar a wise investment for his MTD. I think the Bart preamp sounds fantastic. I've heard his bass. He'd like a more "passive" type tone in it. That I can sympathize wit. I have a Smith 6 that does ALmost everythin, but had to have a passive J for what it didn't. I'm thinkin maybe Mr. Sims has same type of idea, and wonderin if the Aguilar might add a passive quality to his bass.

...

For a more "passive" tone... go passive.

Thats the contrary to the sizzle he mentioned.

But if that MTD has Bartolini Quad Coils.. wired in series, its never going to have the sound of that Jazz Bass.

A good match for your Darryl Jones would be the J-retro.
