Aguilar OBP-3 wiring mod question

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a bass today (Schecter Diamond J 5) and it came already mod'd with EMG pickups, a BTS preamp, and passive tone. Not bad... setup is:
Stacked vol/ptc - pan - bass - treble

I have an Aguilar OBP-3 pre with all 3 controls separate that I bought used. I want to put that into this bass. But for right now, I don't want to drill any more holes, as I haven't technically paid for the bass yet.

What I'd like to do is make the setup like this:
stacked vol/vol - ptc - mid - bass
I want the treble control to be set flat permanently. Is there a way to wire the OBP-3 so that you could eliminate a control like that without having to just hide a pot in the cavity?

Once I pay for the bass, I can certainly go buck wild on drilling holes and buying more pots, but I'm just looking for the MacGuyver fix for now.

meter the pot for it's resistance turned up to the level you want and just solder a resistor of that value in there.

I decided to just pop it in and see how it sounds, sans PTC or bypass (not done yet, though). But I wouldn't mind exploring more options in the future...

I have 3 way switches (on-on-on), a rotary 5 way, the dual 500k linear pot and some caps of various values.
Anyone got mods that they have in mind that aren't on the Aguilar site?

It you want it flat, there is no reason to measure the resistance, as you know it would be 50% of the resistance of the pot.

I would personally rather wire a trimmer pot inside of the control cavity than use fixed resistors.

There are a number of different things you can do with those parts, however, if you don't have something specific in mind, you shouldn't add crap for the sake of adding crap.
You're just setting yourself up for a bunch of ridiculous options that won't be all that useful, and an increased likelihood of something going wrong, like a cold solder joint or a broken wire.

I'm basically looking for suggestions that would be good and useful.
Could I have a 3 position mid switch, for example?

The Aguilar diagrams show how to wire a variable control for the mid point.
