Question Aguilar obp2 w/EMG45DC ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi to all!

Have anybody used Aguilar OBP2 with EMG 45 DC ?
I have two EMG45DC on my 6-string and EMG on-board 2-band preamp.
Is it big difference if I change it with Aguilar?
And what kind of? Maybe it'd be warmer or harder?

Thankyou..

Hey there ..
I've decided to get rid of my EMGs as I'm not an EMG person .. I have a p5 and a cs (cs bridge position) in a godin I found they didn't give me the sound I wanted they were matched with an EMG BQC (the three band) I took it out and have put an obp1 in and I found it definitely warmed and softened the emgs .. it was only slight but you could hear it ..

I"ve ordered some SD passive pickups .. I think I'm definitely a passive pickup guy

I found that without using outboard EQ to quite an extent .. I found it with a ebs micro bass 2 .. I coudln't un-EMG the EMGs enough for me

I didn't find any amount of manipulation of the BQc got me anywhere useful .. it works .. it just works with the EMGS rather than against the EMGness

I'm planning on doing a few recordings of the emgs with and without the obp but I'm really unsure when I'll get too it .. and considering you have DC's yours are already harder sounding than my p and cd

cheers
Paul

Hi Maximbass,

Aguilar is a very good choice but if possible get the Aguilar OBP3! It's not much more expencive but gives you more and better extra control in the mid-range! With that you have a full-range control and you can make any high-quality-sound you like! I've build this thing into my Yamaha and it really is amazing and superb what you get!! There is no other with this quality and possibility's! For the OBP-3 there are different schema's to fit your needs! Check the Aguilar site > http://www.aguilaramp.com/pdf/support_wiring_obp3.pdf and this > http://www.bestbassgear.com/aguilar-obp3-preamp.htm

You also can look at this one! It's new, a different concept and works with filters like alembic do (but better)! I have no experience with this one but the reviews and comments (specialy from Alembic users) are great!
http://www.acguitars.co.uk/Home/. I own a Alembic myself and the concept of 'filter-based' EQ is unique and fantastic! It's one of the strong points from Alembic for as long as they exist!

With this I think you have 2 of the best pre-amps in the world!

Good luck!

Hi Paul and AvE !

Thanks for answers!
Well, I can't say that I'm an EMG-person also :-)
I got custom-made 6-string from my friend-luthier.
It's ash body, Wenge fingerboard, thru-neck Fodera-look bass ))

So, the one and only possibillity to make this wood sound was to mount EMG soapbars, which
my friend sent me from Taiwan (!) with 2-band BTC Eq. It was 4 years ago and I've never played any EMG and especially humbuckers before. I decided it to be 2 humbuckers for having deep low end even using only one of them, so I can play only with the bridge-one with extra bass on BTC Eq. and have real punchy sound.
Usually, I play on balance=center position for diff. styles from jazz to funk and whatever; the slaping and popping are great when bridge and neck are on equal volumes. I play DR Hi-Beams and I'm pleased with them.
But, sometimes my gear's sound seems hard, metalic or annoying to me. Maybe it's because of hard body-ash..
So I want to make my pick-ups smoother or warmer, but not to lose that "trrr" that I got on "E" and low "B".
I just want to make it more.. gentle or smth..?
I like the sound of Antony Jackson, Bona, Mike Pope, Tom Kennedy and many others from Fodera basses.
So my friends adviced me to try Aguilar OBP's. I'd like to try many variants of bass pre-amps and pick-ups
but here (see my Location :-) we haven't such opportunities.
Now you nkow the story ))

About 'filter-based' EQ..
It's really interesting thing. Although, I didn't get how does it exactly works :-),
maybe, AvE, you can make make it clear?

Thanks again!

HI you wanted another comment but I'm not really sure what to say ..
try an obp ... the obp 3 sounds like a good idea .. I'm thinking about getting one just to try

if that doesnt work for you then you maybe need to try a different pickup whether it be emg or not .. read some stuff about the emgs on this site .. there is alot of talk on here about the DC and most people dislike for it in the bridge position especially

a emg tw was going to be what I was going to try if I was going to try it as you get both a CS and a J in one .. both of which would give you more warmth and more character ..

there are a million choices and peoples opinions on here are great but really if you haven't heard it you haven't heard it

good luck
Paul

sorry I haven't heard the term of filter eq

Paul, thanks..

Sure the main thing is to hear it. Once I tried EMG45CS and 45J
but didn't like it - it was warm but too natural, I prefer to make it more modern )

Thanks agn

Hai Maximbass,

I can't tell you better then what A9X has found on the Alembic-forum! This is a very good explanation for the use of filter-EQ! If you want to know more check the rest of the Alembic-forum and do some searching! Keep in mind that the pre-amp from AC-Guitars is more advanced!

I will check out the 'AC-guitar' preamp myself cause i'm very interrested!

Good luck!

It has more features, but there is a lot of subtle detail engineering in the Alembic gear, so more advanced, I doubt it.

Hi everybody,

I wanna thankyou guys for comments!
The Alembic-forum has a great number or useful reports, so now I can imagine
how's that filter EQ works. It seems to be really flexible pickup-operating feature,
you can achieve so many different colors of the bass sound, that couldn't be happen with common volume-balance-preamp-set. I can say now I'm really confused with purchasing an ordinary preamp. I need to learn more about that new A.C.-bass-EQ-01 pre.
For example, i think it's critical to unintentional turning the knobs while playing - you can't rich the same sound so quick,
isn't it?
And still one thing is left - to try before buy! ))
