Aguilar pre-amp question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have two basses with the same knob set-up. A stacked Vol/Pan knob, a mid knob, and a stacked bass/treble knob. Which aggie pre would I use? One of them is my new Dirty Blonde thumb with the twin jazz pickup at the bridge. Now, the bass/treble stacked knob also has a push/pull selector to go from dual to single coil mode in the rear twin jazz pickup. Would I lose this function with an Aguilar(OBP-3) setup? Thanks...

DW

Hi DW,
sounds like the OBP-3 is your choice.
The push pull switch can still be used, but you will have to make sure that all pots that are on your bass right now will match the required values for the OBP-3, which I seriously dought they will.

Good luck

hey, the OBP 3 has the stacked bass/treble setup too. But unless you change the stacked pot, you probably can't use the pull push coil selector.
What I can suggest is to install a switch DPDT/SPDT or something like that..

.............a what? I don't really need the coil splitter anyways, I never use it. Do I have to worry about one of the coils being permanenty split by accident? A good tech should be able to avoid this right?

The OBP-3 uses 50k pots for the bass and treble and normal 250k pots for volume and balance
You'll never find a concentric 50k pot with push/pull on it to split your coil but what you CAN do is use a 250k push/pull pot for your volume which you'll split your coils with. You'll only need another separate balance pot, the mid pot and the bass/treble one.

If you only want 2-band then the same goes for the OBP-1 or OBP-2.

Ok, I ordered an OBP-3. Should be here by the end of the week. The tech said that it should only take about an hour to install, so I'll know real quick if I should replace the pre amps in my other Wicks...

It can't be true, because the stacked bass/treble that's on my LTD is a push pull. It's the coil tap for the twin jazz pickup...

Yes but what's the value of that pot? It doesn't mean it'll be the same as the one for the Aguilar preamp. If it is then you're in luck.

If a tech told you its an one hour job, count on spending 3.
Techs always understimate their time with the gear.
I have an OBP1 and it rocks. Your bass should rock after the upgrade. Please post some results..
take care

DAMNIT!!!

I got the pre-amps in, and the basses sound amazing now. Only problem is, that now neither of the treble(stacked) knobs fit! They go on, but you can't put them all the way down onto the pot or they'll turn the bass and the treble. Make sense? Do you think Aguilar would know where to get knobs that fit their pots? Thanks...

Hi Daywalker,
which of the two do you like better? I have a rockbass SE5 that the preamp is distorting badly on and was thinking of putting an Aguilar in it. are you running the pickups at 18 volt with the 3?
Thanks Tim

which pre was in there originally ? a mec ?

Well, they both sound great to be honest. The only reason why I went OBP-2 in the Blonde, is because the factory pre-amp was only 2-band. I kept it simple on that one, with so much maple I never need to adjust the mids anyways. If I must, I could just dial it in on the amp. I'm running them both at 9V, but the option to go 18V is always there. It's got plenty of volume now, so I most likely will leave it at 9V.

Yes, they both had the MEC pre-amps previously. The push/pull knob was(and still is) to go active/passive.

Thank you Daywalker!
My bass is also a 2 band and I was thinking A OPB-1 or 2 you have been a big help. Tim
