Talking Alembic Activator J Pickups/Preamps

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

I've got this custom J-Style bass (approximately 20 years old) that I just pulled out of the closet and had tweaked and setup. In the bass are a set of Alembic JZ BT Activator pickups (which IMO have always sounded great in this bass) however, it seems like the electronics (preamp/pots) are in need of replacement. I just located the exact set on the Alembic website:

http://alembic.stores.yahoo.net/jzbtacpic.html

My question is, what might be a suitable preamp replacement? (I don't think I'll be able to track down just the Alembic preamp/electronics and don't want to spend over $1K for a whole new set). At that same time I believe that the Alembic J-pickups may be fussy in matching a preamp.

The other option is: would I be better off going for new J-pickups and preamp? Such as the Nordstrand NJ4SE with say a Aguilar OP-3?

Thanks!

how about 250k vol pots and a stellartone tonestyler and make her passive?
if not, I like audere for J basses. what do you like, is the question at hand
as for the possible fussiness of preamp matching, I know David Meadows at audere will help you out if there are any potential problems
