If I had Nordstrand split-coils in any bass I own, I wouldn't swap them out for anything. (I do have Fender split-coils in a Warmoth Jazz. I wouldn't swap those out for anything either.)
I must admit my bias: I hate noise. To me, good tone + unwanted noise = bad tone. I don't believe any potential tone benefits of a single coil pickup outweigh the noislessness of a split-coil. But I also believe any tone advantage a single coil might have over a split-coil is miniscule.
Basically, a split-coil J pickup is the same as a split P pickup without the offset. I have never heard anybody complain about the humbucking effect of the split P ruining the single-coil character of the sound it produces.
