Already getting bored with my tone....

I'm new to bass. Been playing for going on 3 months.

My gear is a stock MIM P Bass and a Peavey TNT 115S. I've raved about this setup, but mainly because of how cheap I got it, not for the quality of the sound. Yes, good enough to learn on, but I'm getting bored with the tone. I can clearly hear that this outfit doesn't sound nearly as good as what I hear on the records I'm listening to.

And I don't have the spare cash lying around for a Sadowsky and a boutique amp....

The bass is adequate enough as it is, but will my tone be enhanced greatly by a higher quality pickup? Or am i simply not going to be able to significantly improve the tone of this setup?

tell ya what, a god amp definately makes all the difference, i have a bottom of the line spector performer 4 string, and i used to play it through a 65 watt ibanez amp, i recently bought a 200watt Yorkville combo and a 2x15 Sunn Cabinet and everything sounds soooooo much better now. definately look into a new amp.
