Am I hearing things? (wood covers on PU)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, all,

Awhile back I had someone put wood covers on my Bartolinis. I swear I think they lost just a little bit of their clarity. Wood, especially that thin, shouldn't be able to do this. Am I hallucinating?

Why shouldn't it be able to do it? You are putting something solid between the magnets and the vibration.

The wood may be a little thicker than the plastic covers, so maybe your pickup is further from the string.

In *theory* it shouldn't do it because it is magnetically transparent, just like the plastic cover that it replaced.

Whatabout the solid plastic covers that were there before the wood.

My guess? Any cover over the pickup is going to have some effect on the tone received by the pickups. The wood must have a different effect.

I am guessing here, so IMHO.

Plastic and wood covers have no effect on the sound of a pickup. But, if they are made too thick that can force you to have to lower the pickups and this can effect the tone a good bit.

Interesting. Always wondered about wood covers.

Since everything (or so I've read) has a magnetic field, maybe the wood covers are somehow disrupting things?

The only way a wood cover will effect the magnetic field, is if the wood is silicious. meaning: it contains silica, which is basically, microscopic specs of glass/sand. The silica contains metals from the earth, and can very slightly disturb the gauss field, but other than this, it should not effect the tone too much.
