AMDLX JV pickup upgrade options for high output?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have come to the conclusion that the SCN pickups in my 03 Am Dlx Jazz V, while very nice sounding, just aren't quite aggressive enough for my tastes these days.
I discovered this after building up a Squier Jazz Dlx V with Sadowsky pickups and then having the hardest time NOT playing the Squier. The bass KILLS! Unfortunately, that means that my baby... my basswife... the bass I'll never sell... is sitting in its case.

So, the high output aggressiveness that emanates from the pair of Sadowsky HCs is prompting this switch, but they don't fit US Fender 5s. Nor do DiMarzio.

From what I'm seeing and hearing about, the 2 names that come up the most for an upgrade are Nordstrand and Lindy Fralin.
I have no idea what the Nordstrands output may be, they don't list it.
Lindys are 9.3/9.8 k.
Sadowsky HCs are HOT (I want to say near 16 k when I tested them).

Who makes a pickup that would fit with high output, clear and modern tone, hum-cancelling?
If it's Nordstrand or Lindy, who's got the closest to Sadowsky, let's say?

I like my 2006 ADJV the way it is, but you might think about a preamp change instead.

If not, I've seen an ADJV with a set of Sadowsky pups in it. While not the perfect size, it sounded great. The guy just put the Sad pups in the Fender pup covers. I think you need to slightly mod the covers to expose the pole pieces just right, but it didn't look bad and would be easy to do.

I would think Nordstrand would be as close as you could get in a drop in replacement for the tone you're describing.

Seymour Duncan Qtr Pounders are hot pups and a drop in replacement, but they are single coil. Neck: 20.9 k Bridge: 22.2 k

I have the East preamp in it already. That was a PHENOMENAL upgrade and worth every penny and more.

But the pickups are just a little mellower than I want at the moment. Love the tone, just not enough cut and the preamp doesn't shape that aspect of the tone.
