American deluxe humbucker

I have an american deluxe p bass with a humbucker at the bridge (1997). I like it but think it lacks a bit. I'd like something that bites a little more. Maybe a little more beefy. Does anyone have any suggestions? New pickup? New preamp?

I had a 1999 sample, and also thought the HB was a little weak. I considered Rio Grande:

Aero makes some models that might work, and would probably do a custom job too:

You could also send the original pickup to someone like Lindy Fralin for a rewind to make it hotter.
