american deluxe P pickup replacement

Sign in to disble this ad
i have a fender american deluxe p bass (which is a fantastic bass) but the sound of the humbucker on the bridge isnt my favorite.. It sounds a little clanky to me and it seems like its missing something.

My question is, i love the sound of the 60's jazz bass pickups, which they make reissues of now..

Would it be possible to take out the humber and put two 60's reissue pickups on the bridge? i dont think they would fit into the slot, so i would have to route it out and i dont know if thats worth it.....

any help would be appreciated

-Mike

Don't know you'd just have to measure. The problem with a pair of J's would be the screw towers get in the way. Some guys have actually cut the inside towers off. That may help or may not. There a some makers like Rio Grande who make double J's. You could also use a single J/or whatever and configure a a surround or pickgaurd - if the pup fits.

i seem to recall seeing a p/u cover that would allow the fitting of 2 j-bass pickups... i'm still searching but haven't found it yet

I have a P Deluxe and i know what you mean. I never solo the bridge. I only use it as a P enhancement (slightly rolled off). The thing is this - the pu's and pre on the Deluxe are designed to work together. Though it looks like a double J I guarantee it's not wound as if it were 2 full J pu's. A J pu is designed to stand alone. Though you may not like how the Deluxe J sounds, there's no guarantee changing to 2 full J's would be better - you wouldn't know until you try it with the existing pre. You may want to add a bypass and it's still a crapshoot.

Still, if you're willing to go that far you can try this. I did it to my parts J in '82 with 2 DiMarzio J's in the bridge position and full switching options. I cut off the inner ears and glued them together. Bottm line - I found it to be very overwhelming and eventually took them out. Too over the top, both signal and tonewise. Currently I'm running 2 Aero's passive with one bridge cover empty and it sounds amazing. No need for the 3rd pickup IMO. Measure the width of 2 J covers vs the Deluxe pickup and see if you have to rout. If you do there's no going back, so think about it - I'd avoid that option myself. Or you can try the Rio Grande double J as previously stated if it's a direct drop-in.
