Amp crackles when turned up loud?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I didn't know where to put this but I figured it was more of an electronics problem than an amp problem.

I have an old guitar amp (Peavey Bandit 112, the old type made in USA) that I'm going to sell on eBay. The only problem is, its fine at low volumes, but when it's turned up loud it crackles really badly when I play. Ive been told by an electronic-savvy dad of a friend that a transistor has gone and that it should be fairly easy and cheap to fix. I was wondering whether any of you guys would know what the problem is or where I could start!?

Thanks a lot

So it's not a crackly volume knob, right? You should be able to turn it up and down a couple of times and get rid of it if it is. It crackles while playing? I haven't experienced a fried transistor, but I would think that if that failed, you wouldn't hear anything at all. Are you sure that the guitar speaker isn't damaged? Sorry I'm not the most help here.

Thanks for replying. Yeah, it's definitely not a crackly pot, I've had those before. It crackles while playing at loud volumes. Well, I'm not sure about the speaker being damaged, how would I check if that was the case? Thanks
