Angle between pickup and strings
I'm in the process of paying off a vintage Japanese bass from the local(ish) vintage guitar store. And I've noticed that one of the pickups is canted... the top edge is further from the body of the bass than the bottom edge. I also saw the same thing on a vintage Gibson Les Paul bass I looked at.
Does the angle between the pickup and the strings affect anything? Is there any chance someone did this deliberately? Should I worry about having my luthier correct it?
The pickup is usually lower under the bass strings as the thicker string crates a bigger signal. If the pickup is staight the thicker strings would be too loud.
In addition the neck radius makes side string E and G lower than center ones A and D
Thus pickup lower under those strings, this is visible on precision bass where split pickup allows a typical roof like setup
