Annoying pickup hum

Alright, I finally got the replacement for the neck pickup I sent back to Peavey that was cracking. I got around to installing it, wiring it up signal to the volume pot and the shielding to ground. However, I noticed that the pickup is identical to my bridge pickup, and that there is a noticeable 60-cycle hum when I am not playing. At first I thought it was a cold joint from soldering, but the problem didn't go away until both pickups were turned down all the way. I'm thinking that the pickups are the same polarity, and that I need to wire it so that the ground goes to where the signal would go and vice versa. Anybody think this is probably the case? The bass is not shielded, but the old neck pickup did not produce this hum, so that's my verdict. I wrote to Peavey about what they think, but I'd like a second opinion. I'd just rewire it, but it is a bit cramped in there...

Bump. The Peavey guy (Steve Smith for those who want to know) says that reversing the wiring should work, but if not to send the pickup back in for a replacement. I know that I am not going to send that back to Peavey anytime soon, as they have horrible turnaround.

Alright, problem solved. I rewired the neck, and now it is dead quiet with both pups all the way up. However, the way I wired it appears to have made it ultra-fat with the neck, average with the bridge, and out of phase with both up.
