Another Grounding question...

Sign in to disble this ad
Yes I have searched, but perhaps I don't know how to use it effectively...I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for so.....

I have a TBC jazz that I have taken out the pre (decided to go passive) and wired it up in series with only a Volume (temporarily until I get some new pots/jack/etc...which was ordered today). The problem is, I am having a terrible grounding noise (you know what kind, the kind that dissappears when you touch the metal). I have double checked the grounds, they are all in contact. The bass was shielded (with paint) and I have added a ground to the cavity. With the bass plugged in, if I touch the Neck p'up poles the hum gets LOUD. If I touch the bridge p'up poles, the hum goes away. If I touch the cavity (painted area), the strigns, the bridge, etc... hum goes away. I suspect that it has something to do with the neck p'up, but how do I check it? I had it wired in parallel, same results.

Please help point me in the right direction to look. Thanks

Hmm...try touching something grounded with one hand and the neck pup poles with the other hand. No noise then?

Not sure what's causing this, but if it passes that test you could make the problem go away by grounding the neck pup pole pieces if possible.

i feel like there's a wiring error. if you wire your pup in the wrong polarity, it'll buzz or hum when you touch the magnet. it ever happened to me when i tried to rewire my MM bass.
