Another hum cancelling PU for Jazz Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Giving a bass to my daughter for her B-day in Feb. She has just picked up the bass to go along with all the other instruments she plays.

I have an American Jazz that I am going to let her have, but it has EMG’s in it.
I don’t want her to have to worry about a battery going dead while she is just learning

I think I have the original PU’s that came with it but I was not crazy about their sound to begin with, hence the EMG’s.

I am looking for suggestions on replacement pu’s that are hum canceling.
I have read the posts on here about some hi-end Jazz pu’s (SD Antiquity/Nordstrand),
but I am wondering about Seymour Duncan’s Classic stacked and the Fender Noiseless Jazz

Does anyone have any experience they can share about these?

Thanks
Rick

Just out of curiosity, wouldn't just marking the calendar to replace a $2 battery be a lot cheaper? I'm not trying to be facetious. I use active basses to earn money and even with lots of practice, rehearsal and gigging I change my batteries every 6 months at the most on my 9v preamps. On my 18v, it's more like once a year.

For aftermarket hum cancelling, I just added a set of split coil Barts to my SX and would recommend them. Good luck either way.

Agreed, one good answer would be to teach her to unplug the bass when she's not using it, and mark the calendar for battery replacement. Save yourself the cost of the pickups in the short term.

Otherwise the Fender SCN's are great, I use them and like the tone.

I've used the Seymour Duncan Hot Stack Jazz in my Jazz Bass Specials, and it sounds great paired with the Duncan 1/4 pounder P. I get the feeling 2 of them might sound a little thin (for my taste) in a Jazz, but not 100% sure, as I haven't heard them...

In my Geddy Lee Jazz Bass, I have two Nordstrand NJ4SV's and they sound AMAZING....

Just my .02

I enjoy the J-45 set I have from Bill Lawrence. They're my favorite bass pickups. I believe they go for about $60 each. They sound better to me than Fender's noiseless offerings, although Bill designed the SCNs for them (quite a good pickup as well!).

It's the simple things that I dont even think about when I start messing with my gear!

I was just looking at the bass and realised how easy it will be to replace the battery if it does die (I forgot about the control plate, I am used to the Pbass pickguard)

Thanks to all for the input. I think the simple plan is the best for now.

So... you're giving your daughter a thousand bucks worth of bass, and you're thinking of putting another hunnert bucks worth of pickups into it, so she won't have to worry about a $2 battery petering out when she's learning?

Dude, that's bizarre. Seriously.

Most parents I know want their kids to have it better than they did.

Make it simpler than writing on a calendar; replace it on her birthday.

Seriously though, she's gonna drain the battery at some point by leaving the cord plugged in overnight.

And THAT'S the valuable lesson; take proper care of stuff or it doesn't work. It also creates the happy side effect of reducing to nearly zero the chance that someone will trip over the bass cord & damage a valuable instrument.

I could just send you a passive Jazz bass and you could send me the MIA.
Always willing to help out a fellow player and father

True, I would love to give her the world. But after talks with her mom, I think the Ibanez bass I found and a Rumble amp are more in line with her level. I will hold on to the Jazz for her when she is playing like Tal. (crosses fingers)
She can also use my SVT when she is ready to move it herself!!

Very good idea. Supportive and realistic at the same time.
