| Another pickup phase question...

So I've got this Y2K-ish Squier P-Bass Special, which has become a test bed for mods. Most recently, I had a Gibson TB+ pickup installed in place of what was an EMG Select J-Bass unit. The Gibby pup sounds great soloed, but when mixed with the EMG Select P-Bass, the two are out of phase. Normally, the fix would be to swap the EMG's leads at the selector switch to get them back in phase, but my tech tells me that since the leads consist of a shield and a hot, we can't do that (only when two separate insulated wires are present for the connection does this work). The EMG is encapsulated, so we can't reverse them at the pickup anyway.
The way I see it, my choices are:
a) only use the pickups separately, or,
b) replace the "P" pup with one that has separate conductor wires so we can reverse the leads as initially planned
Am I missing something either way?
